Is ChatGPT safe for business use?
The short answer
On a business account, yes. OpenAI says it does not train on data from ChatGPT Business or Enterprise by default. That promise belongs to the company account. Paste a client file into a personal account and the personal rules apply again.
In detail
The business plans work differently from the personal ones. OpenAI states "No training on your business data by default" on its pricing page (read on 22 September 2026). The same page sells seats from two users up. A firm with two people can already use it.
Work with personal data also needs a processing agreement. OpenAI says it supports customers in signing a Data Processing Addendum. That sentence sits on its business data page. It does not say which plans get the addendum.
Where the data sits is a separate question. OpenAI names storage at rest in the US, Europe and eight other places. It lists that option for Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and the API. ChatGPT Business is not in that list.
The bigger risk is the account nobody approved. On the personal plans OpenAI trains on your chats unless you opt out. The switch sits at privacy.openai.com under "do not train on my content". The free plan has that switch too.
Rivals promise much the same in other words. Claude Team trains on nothing by default, but stores your data in the US. Microsoft keeps EU traffic inside the EU Data Boundary. Mistral Vibe Team is the exception and trains until an admin stops it.
Decide first who may use which account for client work. Give those people a business account. Keep a private assistant for anything you would rather not hand over at all. The comparison below sets Lumo against ChatGPT on that point.
