Our verdict
For anyone who wants to keep their conversations private, Lumo is the better choice. Proton says Lumo does not train on your chats, encrypts your saved history so that Proton cannot read it, and builds no ad profile.
ChatGPT trains on conversations by default until you opt out at privacy.openai.com or open a Temporary Chat, and OpenAI says its Go plan may include ads. ChatGPT does offer more tools: voice chats, image analysis and file uploads.
It is also cheaper, at €8 a month for Go against €9.99 a month for Lumo AI Plus on a yearly plan. Pasting in client records, medical questions or contracts? Use Lumo. For general work, ChatGPT with training turned off is a reasonable pick.

Does ChatGPT train on my conversations?
Yes, unless you opt out. According to OpenAI's policy page, your ChatGPT conversations feed further training of its models by default. To stop that, open privacy.openai.com and choose "do not train on my content"; new conversations are then left out of training.
Is Lumo more private than ChatGPT?
Yes, out of the box. Lumo does not use your chats for training, and your saved history is protected with zero-access encryption, so Proton itself cannot read it. One open point: Proton does not say how long that history is kept. ChatGPT gets closer once you turn training off or use Temporary Chat, but its starting point is to learn from what you type.
Is ChatGPT Go cheaper than Lumo Plus?
Yes. ChatGPT Go costs €8 a month. Lumo AI Plus costs €12.99 month to month, or €9.99 a month when you pay €119.88 for the year. Twelve months of Go add up to €96, which is €23.88 less than annual Lumo AI Plus. Both also have a free plan, so you can try each one before paying anything.
Can I use ChatGPT without it keeping my chats?
Temporary Chat comes closest. You pick it from the dropdown in ChatGPT, and OpenAI says those chats do not appear in your history, do not use or create memories and are not used to train its models. For a setting that covers all your future conversations, use the training opt-out on privacy.openai.com instead; you only need to switch it off once.
