Our verdict
Lumo is the better fit if you do not want other people reading your chats. Google says human reviewers, including trained staff at its service providers, look at some Gemini conversations, and those chats can be kept for up to three years even after you delete your activity.
Google's own advice is to leave out anything confidential you would not want a reviewer to see. Lumo does not train on your chats, and Proton cannot open your encrypted history. Gemini wins on price: Google AI Plus costs €4.99 a month, against €9.99 a month for Lumo AI Plus on the annual plan.

Does Google read my Gemini chats?

Google says human reviewers, among them trained reviewers from its service providers, read part of the Gemini data it collects to improve its services, including its generative AI models. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, along with details such as your language, device type and location, even if you delete your activity. Google advises you not to enter confidential information.
How do I stop Gemini from saving my activity?
Turn off Keep Activity. Open Gemini Apps Activity at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and switch the setting off. New chats then stay with your account for 72 hours, the same as temporary chats, instead of being auto-deleted after 18 months. Chats a human reviewer has already seen are not removed when you delete your activity; Google keeps those for up to three years.
Is Google AI Plus cheaper than Lumo Plus?
Yes. Google AI Plus costs €4.99 a month. Lumo AI Plus costs €12.99 month to month, or €9.99 a month when you pay €119.88 for the year. Over twelve months Google AI Plus comes to €59.88, which is €60 less than annual Lumo AI Plus. Both also offer a free version, so you can compare them before paying.
Is Lumo more private than Gemini?
Yes, without changing any settings. Lumo does not train on your chats, and zero-access encryption means only you can read your saved history. Gemini auto-deletes activity after 18 months by default, and some chats go to human reviewers. The one exception on the Lumo side is anonymized feedback you choose to send on answers from the Apertus model.
