Our verdict
Claude is the better choice if you want your chats kept out of AI training. Anthropic only uses conversations for training when you allow it, while OpenAI trains ChatGPT on them unless you opt out.
Anthropic also publishes its retention periods: deleted chats leave its back-end systems within 30 days, and chats you do share for training may stay in de-identified form for up to five years. The OpenAI page on training that we read names no retention period.
ChatGPT is cheaper to start with: Go costs €8 a month, Claude Pro €18, or €15 a month on the annual plan. If price decides it, ChatGPT will do, provided you switch off training on day one.

Does Claude train on my conversations?
Only if you allow it. Anthropic uses chats to improve its models when you have given permission, and chats in incognito mode are never used, even with that permission switched on. To check, select your name in the menu, open Settings, then Privacy, and look at the toggle under "Help Improve our AI models".
How do I stop ChatGPT from training on my chats?
Go to OpenAI's privacy portal at privacy.openai.com and click "do not train on my content". For one sensitive question, a Temporary Chat also works: it does not appear in your history and is not used for training. For the switch inside the ChatGPT app itself, OpenAI refers to its Data Controls FAQ.
Is Claude more expensive than ChatGPT?
Yes, if you compare it with Go, the cheapest paid ChatGPT plan. Go costs €8 a month. Claude Pro costs €18 a month, or €15 a month when you pay €180 for the year up front. Anthropic notes that its listed prices exclude tax. Both have a free plan, so you can try each one before paying.
How long does Claude keep deleted chats?
Within 30 days they are gone. A chat you delete leaves your history at once and Anthropic's back-end storage within 30 days. The exception is chats you allowed for training: Anthropic may hold those for up to five years in its training pipelines, in de-identified form. OpenAI's page on training gives no comparable figure for ChatGPT.
